In explaining this song, “Peras Argentinas,” Denton musician Sam Escalante says:
“As far as lyrics go I’m much less concerned about what words are chosen for a particular meaning than finding a good way to get the melody across. The melody for the verse was infectious from the first time it popped into my head as a part to whistle. So one day last summer I decided to make it into a vocal melody since it would work better than as just an instrumental part. I pieced together some thoughts and feelings (in Spanish) I had at the time which are of almost no importance now. As far as the rest of the lyrics go, you’ll have to ask Matthew since he wrote them. I’m assuming they’re about a girl, like most songs anyway. Peras Argentinas (in the literal sense) exists as a wooden crate originally used to ship pears from Argentina, which is sitting in my apartment.”
This song is for a project he’s working on called Nikki Coco.
